Saw Opening Sequence

This is the next scene you can see in the film, a man walking tied up by he`s leg this gets the audience worked up and brings an element of suspense, you can see the lighting is dark in the background shows a element of fear and by he`s facial expression you can sense fear

This is the bit after the twisted picture logo that you saw previously, this screenshot is what comes right after so now by the lighting you can tell that the films genre is either a scary or thriller film already, you can see quite a lot of things in this screenshot I just took but it is just a light looking into someone's eyes who is closed, this gives the audience suspense already.

This is the first thing you see when you are about to watch SAW the twisted picture sign is written in very bold writing and the writing is covered in stinging nettle, you would not see this kind of writing on a normal film or a kids film but straight away the audience can tell what type of film this will be due to the writing and the lighting is very dark so you can tell it will be either horror or thriller.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My group did not go for a specific audience when we were filming our final product, the Genre was thriller and it was aimed to all thriller films fans, however when we were sitting down trying to pitch our ideas as a group we did want to aim our final product to over 18s because we know they are the type of age group that are interested in seeing thriller movies

Audience Research

Today I will be asking 4 different people of different age groups what makes a good thriller movie; their opinions will be taken into consideration for the next film

AMY, 27 Years Old, Lives In London

She says that a good thriller has to make her jump and she must not know when the Villain will strike or else it will be too obvious and she has time to cover her face so she won`t see it, for her she needs the element of surprise.

GARY, 29 Years Old, Lives In Aldershot

Gary says that a good thriller has to have a lot of blood he loves it when there is so much violence because a good thriller can`t just have some clown coming out of closets to scare the little kids that’s Disney Channel stuff. 

STEVEN, 18 Years Old, Lives In Chelmsford

Steven believes that a good thriller film should have a good back story the audience need to understand why the Villain is after the family or kid, instead of just a random family moving into a new house and it turns out to be haunted, he says he`s favourite thriller film of all time would be the film Ouija because the film has a back story why the kids are haunted due to the fact that they played “The Devils Game”

What Is LiveType

Live Type is a program where it allows you to create titles and credits for film by using various font types, font effects and background effects which are used to overlay the font. A lot of thriller movies do this especially in the opening sequence, they might use red, droopy fonts to try make it look like blood, already this puts fear in the audience or gives them excitement or suspense

Worms Eye View

These shot shows you something from a very low perspective, an example of when there used to track a characters footsteps. The low angle affect add suspense as you don`t know who the person is as you can only see their feet, we used this a lot when we were doing our own Opening Sequence.

Long Shot

A Long Shot is only important when it comes to showing the whole location the character is at and the surrounding and setting they are at, long shots help set the atmosphere and mood of the scene

Over The Shoulder Shot

This type of shot can show you something from someone's point of view (POV). It can show you something that the person in front cannot see, which audience seem to like especially in a thriller because it puts them in the driver seat so if anything dramatic is about to happen they have time to hide, tension is built as you can see something they can`t which also creates mystery because the audience will be thinking "what will happen to them"?

Medium Shot

A Medium shot allows you to see someone's surrounding and from a normal detailed view, this shot is very popular because you can see the characters actions, facial expressions and clearly what is taking place in the scene

Extreme Close Up

As you have heard of the close up in the last post an extreme close up is very effective in creating suspense and showing a very detailed shot, it also makes the audience think and that gives the film a lot of mystery, for example you may see a close up of a knife but you won`t know whose it is or why it is there, that is the whole tension that the extreme close up provides

Demos Of Scary Shots

Close Up, A Close up is used to bring something further to the screen, they show a lot of detail and are used in a lot of shows, films especially thriller films. The important of a close up is to let the audience know what the person is feeling and it shows every single and small detail in the persons face, it can also show the persons expression and what they are feeling , this puts the audience in their shoes and show how the victim or villain is feeling.

Props Used In Our Opening Sequence

In our opening sequence we did not use a lot of props, we had a normal phone and the Antagonists had just a normal plastic knife which was used to chase the actor into the forest

The Walt Disney Company has been around since 1923 by the two brothers Roy and Walt as an animation studio, Disney land theme park OFFICIALLY opened on July the 17th 1955, from humble beginnings as a cartoon studio in the 1920s to today's global corporation Disney still excites and entertains no matter what age group seem to visit.

Disney Own 4 Studios and they are called; The Prospect Studio, Golden Oak Ranch, KABC and Studio B and obviously their own one Walt Disney Studios.
Disney use different networks such as ESPN, Disney Channel itself , ABC Studios and ABC Family and a lot more.

 Most Scary Villains In Thriller 

This Character is probably one of the most scary villains known to man especially in the film industry and it has to be The Jigsaw from SAW 

  Samara Morgan from The Ring is one of my favourite villains but yet still one of the scariest to be known

Frankenstein is probably the most famous villain, they have even turned him to a popular tourist attraction and even turned him into cartoons but the original is still very scary #

Crew

It is merely impossible to create a film opening without a crew to help, there will be different roles and obs for every individual to play so people do not get left out, this will then help on the opening of our sequence because everybody will be involved and participating to make the opening sequence a success.

Camera- We will need somebody to film the opening, to get the right angles, to get the right shots and to know what it is like behind the camera

Sound-  The sound will be a big aspect in the filming because that creates the suspense for the audience and if the audience do not feel the suspense then they do not feel the film at all since after all the film is meant to be a thriller film.

Editing- The film will not be a success as long as someone is not editing it and if they are not editing it properly then the film will be a huge shambles especially if there is a voice over or music playing in the background the person editing needs to know when to either crop it out or make it work

Director- Somebody is needed to direct actors and camera people as to what to do and how to do it, they will not be bossy in anyway possible but if they do not like anything then they will be asked for it to be changed in the play

Light/Locations-  There will be someone in charge of where each shot will be filmed and how much light will be needed, too much light and the film will not work and it will be hard to see however little light will also make it a problem for the audience to see, it needs to be just right, the location needs to be perfect for the film, obviously seeing as we do not have a lot of money to rent out places we have to make do with what we have

Production Diary

 In today`s lesson we began to edit everything we had filmed on the green screen and discovered a problem. We used a still image as the background and discovered that it looks unrealistic. This is because the person in front of the camera would be moving as they talk causing lighting changes on their face and because the image is still which makes the lighting the same and does not change it makes the background look two dimensional.

Film Analysis ; Classification

For a film to be awarded a rating of PG, it can feature violent and intense scenes however they cannot be accompanied by gore. There can also be mild use of light profanity.

For a film to be awarded a rating of 12, it can feature violent and intense scenes that can contain more gore than a PG film can. This age rating also allows for some sexual references and a mild use of profanity.

For a film to be awarded a rating of 15, it can feature hard violence and intense scenes accompanied by gore. This age rating allows for a strong use of profanity and some mild sexual scenes.

For a film to be awarded a rating of 18, it can feature extreme violence and intense scenes with a lot of gore. This age rating also allows for an extreme use of profanity and sexual scenes.

I believe that the age rating best suited for our production is a 12. This is because we don't feel we need all the things that are available at a higher age rating to make a quality production. Also, movies with this age rating (i.e The Sixth Sense) tend to do better at the box office and become more successful than films with a higher or lower age rating. This could be due to the fact that it is available to more people than higher ratings given by film companies

Narrative theories textual analysis: Vladmir Propp

A recent film that fits into Vladmir Propps narrative theory is Kingsman; The Secret Service.

• This films hero is Eggsy; Who trades his life of causing trouble for the police to be a super secret spy. 
• The princess is his mother and sister because they are what motivated him to make the change so that he could protect them. 
• The role of donor is taken by a character called Merlin. He is the gadget guy for Kingsman and supplies Eggsy with what he needs to take down the villain. 
• The Helper is Roxy, a cadet; like Eggsy; who helps in taking down the villain. 
• The Dispatcher is Harry Hart, a fully established gentleman spy working for Kingsman who finds Eggsy and decides to train him. 
• The false hero is Arthur, he is the leader of Kingsman until he is persuaded by the villain to betray them.
• The villain is  Richmond Valentine, a billionaire philanthropist who wants to destroy the world

An older film that fits into Vladmir Propps narrative theory is The Italian Job (1969).

• The hero of this film is Charlie Croker; a cockney thief who has just been released from prison and who wants to do a big job to get rich quick.
• The Princess of this story is the $4 million that he wants to steal.
• The donor is Mr. Bridger who is a crime lord stuck in prison who financially backs Charlie plans.
• The Helper was Freddie who would assist Charlie in every part of the planned heist.
• The dispatcher is Mrs Beckermann, a widow who lost her husband to the mafia because they wanted to do the job.
• The False Hero is "Big" William because he causes the bus with the stolen gold to pivot out of control and hang of the side of a cliff.
• The villains are the mafia because they want the gold as well but they go to a higher extreme to get it.

Character profiles (Batman Returns)

The Joker

The Joker is a supervillain and the archenemy of Batman. He was first introduced in the first Batman and has remained consistently popular. The Joker is a master criminal with a clown-like appearance. Initially portrayed as a violent sociopath who murders people for his own amusement, the Joker later in the 1940s began to be written as a goofy trickster-thief

Costumes Ideas

I Chose this costume idea from the film The Purge because they dress very casual but they are probably one of the scariest characters in Thriller Movies, they used the idea of Professionalism from the suits and then turned it into something quite scary, the masks also had a touch to know that they are coming from an unknown society

                       Mise En Scene

Setting- The setting is a very important element to a Psychological thriller, the two most common locations for Psychological thriller to be set in the city and inside a building, e.g. a house jail restaurant. The countryside isn’t as commonly used as it can get confused with a horror film.
